WJXT: Social Distancing & Social Media

In this time of social distancing, we may forget that as people, we are hardwired to connect (one of the first hormones released when we are born is a bonding hormone). So while we may need be able to meet in person, my own research has demonstrated that social media provides a platform that can encourage empathy. Studies show that the brain interprets online connections just like in-person connections. Oxytocin levels are increased and cortisol (stress hormone) is decreased.
