WJXT: Why do we watch True Crime Shows?

1) The brain loves a mystery

It’s called the Zeigarnik effect: The brain focuses on things that are incomplete and stores it in your memory. That is one reason why we like to solve the cat and mouse mystery.

2) Adrenaline rush

Watching it in a safe environment like our living rooms on a TV or computer screen, allows us to experience a safe amount of stress called “Eustress.”

3) Survival

More women than men report watching Crime shows. In part, watching such shows help the brain determine how we would personally respond if we were in those situations. Psychologists suggest that watching them can preserve the need for survival.
